And We're stalling, We're stalling

So after many attempts and much frustration. I've concluded that if i want to use more then one tape to back  things up, I'll need to use a backup software, and not just a shell script. I've decided to try and setup Bacula to do the backups but this presents a whole host of issues.

First, i don't want to install Bacula on the NAS itself, or at least not without a provided plugin or clearly written steps on how to. Since I don't want to risk breaking the NAS OS (TrueNas) and having to find a new place for the data while I wipe and re-image the NAS.

Second, I don't really want to install it on a VM outside the NAS, as that means that I will be transferring TB's of data from the NAS to Bacula, and back again, as that's (currently) where the tape drive is connected too. This is undesirable for several reasons, but mostly the time it takes to transfer TB's of data over the network is going to slow down the whole process and make the backup take longer then I want it too.

Third, any attempt I've made, which admittedly is a small amount, of setting up a VM on TrueNas, has resulted in a broken(?) VM. I get the OS installed and then i get no more screens, TrueNas just shows blank as if the Machine crashes and TrueNas doesn't know it. I'm fairly sure it's something I'm doing but since I don't know what, I can't fix it.

With all the hurdles, I've become overwhelmed at the problem, and though there are several solutions, I've decided to just put it down frequently and only work on it in little chunks. Hopefully I make a break through here's soon, but until then I'm probably going to be pokey on the posts.
